What to Expect
When you call us we will ...
- Listen to your situation and help you decide on the level and type of assistance needed in your case
- Provide you with contact information for lawyers most appropriate to your situation
- Assist you in contacting a lawyer for a free consultation where you make a mutual decision on whether to proceed or not and agree on a fee structure
- Continue to be available for other services while you work with your lawyer
Many people who contact MFR need legal assistance but don't have an attorney. Whether this is due to a lack of understanding of the law or limited income, the fact is that clients may not achieve their best outcomes if they are not legally well-informed and/or represented. While MFR can educate clients about their rights and responsibilities, we are not lawyers and we do not practice law. In cases where legal counsel is clearly advisable we will encourage people to hire an attorney.
Our Services
When you need legal assistance, we first suggest and help you find local free legal aid resources to check your eligibility. If these resources are not available or appropriate for you, we can refer you to high quality legal help from our informal panel of lawyers. These lawyers can offer their services at affordable rates for appropriate situations or cases. Where mediation is also being used, MFR can coordinate services with these lawyers in order to make the best use of both processes.
Benefits of this Coordinated Service
- Understand your rights and obligations
- Gain access to lawyers with substantial experience in landlord/tenant matters
- Save significant legal expenses
- Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your legal case and possible court outcomes
- Enjoy the broader benefits of legal preparation while using a collaborative process like mediation
- Get advice on how to prepare for court if mediation does not result in a written final agreement
Note: In certain cases it may not be wise or ethical for MFR to be the mediator. In these cases we will assist all parties in finding another mediator.
Cost: Referral and your initial consultation with the lawyer is free.
If you hire a lawyer from our panel your legal fees are negotiated directly with the lawyer, without MFR involvement.
